The Sotho hip hop artist Teemok wants to use events in and around Matjhabeng to create awareness of substance abuse.

“Substance abuse is a major problem in our area, and has flooded our streets in such a way that we now accept this as a norm in our society,” he explains his motivation for taking action in this way.

Tshepo Mokoena – known to his fans, friends and family as Teemok – has embarked on a mission to curb the scourge of drug usage in Matjhabeng and Lejweleputswa.

Teemok started his music career in 2000 as an artist, producer, songwriter and record label owner, and has four albums and music videos to his name.

Teemok is one of the few drug users who has managed to overcome his addiction on his own. This was put into motion when on 5 July this year, he decided to seek professional help and admitted himself into the Green Leaf Rehabilitation centre in Klerksdorp.

Realising the effects that drugs had on his life he began to re-assess and reform himself.

His new single, Dithetefatsi (No to Drugs), warns his fellow Africans about the dangers of alcohol and substance abuse.
