On 20 April, a group of men and a woman claiming to be police officers kidnapped a 58-year-old man and demanded R80 000 from him. They told him that during October 2021 he had been involved in an incident related to gold bearing material and that he was captured on CCTV footage. They took him from his home in Odendaalsrus and made him withdraw R3 000 from a bank in town. The SAPS were alerted of the kidnapping in progress. Two vehicles were stopped some 30 km outside of Bothaville and the suspects, aged between 30 and 60, were arrested. The police found and seized a wallet purse with a SAPS badge, cell phones, the R3 000 cash that had been withdrawn from the bank, documents that show withdrawals of cash that amounts to R50 000 and R150 000, curriculum vitaes (CV’s) of people, copies of applications of Harmony Mine and a number of bank cards. The seven suspects are facing charges of kidnapping, extortion, impersonating a police officer and theft. They will appear in the Odendaalsrus Magistrate’s Court soon.Photo: SAPS
