A manhunt has been launched for 20 suspects who overpowered and robbed three municipal security guards at gunpoint in Virginia.

The incident happend on Tuesday (14/06) when the robbers took copper cable worth more than R2 million from the Virginia Sewerage Main Plant number 1, next to Virginia Correctional Services.

“Twenty unknown African men with Lesotho accents overpowered the guards and fired two shots. They then picked up the two dispensed cartridges from the ground,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, SAPS liaison officer in Lejweleputswa.

Thakeng says as a result of this robbery and the destruction of the infrastructure, the sewerage water is now running into the Sand­river.

A case of business robbery has been registered for further investigation.
