Central24 excelled at this year’s Vodacom Journalist of the Year regional awards, scooping the awards in two of the eight categories, and Netwerk24 taking two more.
Vista’s editor, Marti Will, won the lifestyle category with her article “Khoisan-stamme vat hande vir bevordering van hul kultuur”.
The judges descri-bed it as an insightful piece which focused on the Khoisan people reclaiming and advancing their culture and way of life.
Helena Barnard (NoordKaapBulletin) won the category features, Charné Kemp (NoordKaapBulletin,Volksblad, and Netwerk24) won the category politics, and Alet van der Walt (Netwerk24) won the category sustainability.
This year there were a record 1 300 number of entries, with 225 (17%) coming from the Free State and Northern Cape regions.
The winners were chosen in eight categories and included media houses like the SABC and Newzroom Afrika.
The judges were impressed by the calibre of the submissions, and described each of them as impactful, and effective at exposing wrongdoing at different levels of society.
