South Africa started off the week with a welcome period of mild winter sunshine, with sunny skies and pleasant conditions dominating across the country. But the South African Weather Service has warned that these conditions will soon become stormy again, as meteorologists track an approaching cold front.
Cold front on the move
From today (1 July) onwards, the weather story takes a turn as a significant cold front begins its march inland from the Atlantic Ocean. The Western Cape will bear the first impact of this system, with increasing cloud cover signaling the end of the sunny spell.
By Wednesday 2 July, the cold front is forecast to reach its peak intensity. The Western and Southern Cape will experience the most dramatic shift from the week’s sunny beginning, with scattered showers becoming increasingly likely.
While the cold front dominates the southern regions, other parts of the country will experience a more gradual transition:
- Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo will maintain mostly fine but increasingly cold conditions
- North eastern areas face only a 10% chance of light rain or drizzle
- Morning fog patches may develop in low-lying areas, requiring extra caution for early commuters
The Indian Ocean coastline, including Durban and Richards Bay, will experience cool and windy conditions from Tuesday, with possible isolated showers midweek and sustained winds of up to 40 km/h.
