THABONG, WELKOM – The residents of ward 29 in Thabong are calling on the Matjhabeng Local Municipality to urgently address the escalating problem of illegal dumping in the area.

Several locations have now become health hazards and unsightly dumping grounds, threatening the well-being and safety of the community. As most dump sites are located near schools, they pose significant health risks to the public.

The most severely affected areas include Dr Mongoma Street, the vicinity around the Lebohang Secondary School and Mxi Street, yet there are many more locations experiencing similar problems.

These dumping sites pose serious risks, including the spread of disease, rodent infestations, and environmental pollution. They also endanger learners and pedestrians who use these routes daily.

The DA in Matjhabeng has submitted formal questions and a motion to council, urging the municipality to prioritise the clean-up of these areas and to install skips in high-traffic zones.

The DA calls on the municipality to clear all illegal dumping sites without delay, provide refuse skips or containers at strategic locations to discourage future unlawful dumping, the implement regular monitoring and strict enforcement to prevent further illegal dumping.

“Swift and decisive action is needed to restore cleanliness, safety, and dignity to the people of Thabong ward 29,” says Cllr Zivumile Fandaleki, DA councillor for the Matjhabeng Local Municipality.
