One of the Goldfields’ first veterinarians, and one of the founders of the Virginia SPCA some 60 years ago, has passed away.
Dr Leslie Marshall (79) died in Welkom on Saturday, 24 August.
“Dr Marshall attended the very first founding meeting of the Virginia SPCA nearly six decades ago, and his unwavering support and service to the animals at the Virginia SPCA continued until his last breath,” says Thea Smit of the animal rescue service.
She says his love, loyalty and service to the organisation will always be remembered.
He always had sympathy, and his tremendous wisdom was legendary. Hundreds of animals were treated by his hands.
“In the days when he had more than one vet working for him, he would provide one to spend one day a week at the Virginia SPCA to treat the animals there.
“Thank you, Dr Marshall, you continued right to the very end. Not because you had to, but because you loved and enjoyed your work.
“Your compassion and support to our animals will never be forgotten. Your task on earth is done. Rest now, as your legacy will continue to inspire us,” says Smit.
Juanita Marshall, his wife, says he came to Welkom from Kroonstad, where he had been practising as the state veterinarian.
The first animal hospital was built in Welkom at 7 Alma Road in 1981, around the time of the cat flu epidemic that ravaged the area.
Marshall then went on to build a second clinic, at 127 Riverside Avenue, Virginia.
Marshall leaves behind his wife and a rich legacy.
His memorial service will take place on Saturday, 31 August, at 11:00 at the Old Apostolic Church on the corner of Van Wyk Louw Street and Elizabeth Eybers Avenue, Jan Cilliers Park, Welkom.
