A 63-year-old Hennenman man has been arrested for repeatedly raping a 12-year-old girl over a period of 12 months.
The child’s grandmother became suspicious and confronted the man before she alerted the police of the repeated rape. The man was arrested.
Capt. Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer for the Lejwelepuswa police, says the victim visited the home of the man with a friend after school. He was with his children and the two girls spent the afternoon there. The girls made it a habit to visit the home of the elderly man after school. One day, the friend left the victim behind at the home, and that is when the first rape allegedly happened.
“This is when the old man requested to sleep with the young victim. She refused him and tried to escape from the house, but he caught her and forced her to undress and raped her. He threatened her not to tell anyone. This happened several times when she came to visit after school. He gave her two rands and five rands to buy sweets after the rape ordeals,” says Thakeng.
“The grandmother saw that there was something wrong with the girl, who then confessed that the old man had raped her several times. The grandmother then reported the incident to the police on 9 September,” Thakeng continues.
According to the victim, the ordeal began on 1 August 2021 until it was discovered on 6 August 2022. The elderly man was arrested for rape by Const. Motsane Mosesi of the Hennenman Visible Policing.
