During a joint intelligence driven operation outside Odendaalsrus, four specialised police units confiscated 2 180 litres of the agricultural poison, Roundup, valued at R436 000.
Crime Intelligence, Welkom Public Order Policing (POP), and Odendaalsrus Stock Theft and Endangered Species units received information about a Nissan bakkie and a trailer suspected of loading poison.
On 11 May, the joint operations team followed up on information received and found two suspects loading 95 drums of 20 litres of poison onto a Nissan 1 ton bakkie and a trailer. The suspects were travelling to Welkom when they were apprehended.
A bakkie matching the description was spotted and stopped after the joint operation team conducted a waylay 3 km from Odendaalsrus on the Wesselsbron road.
A search was done and the police found the 20-litre drums containing the agricultural Roundup poison with no proper documentation.
The police accompanied the driver to his residence in Monyakeng, Wesselsbron, where they found another 14 drums of 20-litre poison each.
The drums of poison and the vehicle with the trailer were seized.
The two 40-year-old suspects, both from Monyakeng in Wesselsbron, are facing possession of suspected stolen agriculture poison.
